Botulinum toxin (Type A), commonly known as Botox, is a natural, purified protein that’s used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. As a neurotoxin, Botox works by blocking the nerve signals that cause your facial muscles to contract, leaving your skin looking naturally smoother.
Small doses of the protein are injected through tiny needles at specific points in the facial anatomy. Botox relaxes facial muscles and helps diminish the appearance of deep, dynamic wrinkles -- the kind that are caused by your everyday facial expressions.
Although the term Botox is commonly used to describe all cosmetic injectables made with botulinum toxin, there are several different products available, each with varying formulations, potencies, and approved dosages. Dr. Ryan and her team offer only the safest and most effective products, including:
BOTOX® Cosmetic — This product is one of the most effective cosmetic tools for temporary wrinkle reduction. It’s approved for use to help improve the appearance of angry 11s, or the deep furrows between your eyebrows, and crow’s feet, the tiny smile lines at the corners of your eyes.
Dysport® — This advanced botulinum toxin product is also used to help diminish the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. It’s typically administered at five precise points between and above your eyebrows for natural-looking results.
Botox treatments can generally be performed on the same day as your initial consultation and evaluation. After discussing your goals, Dr. Ryan or one of her aestheticians recommends a product, prepare the injection, and let you know exactly what you can expect during the procedure.
Botox injections are relatively painless, and most patients get the results they’re looking for by having a few small injections throughout the treatment area. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes. Although you may experience minor swelling and redness afterward, these side effects are usually short-lived.
Botox is a popular cosmetic procedure because it delivers immediate results — most patients begin to see smoother skin within 24-48 hours. It also carries few risks or side effects, and requires little to no recovery time. Botox treatments aren’t permanent, however, which means that you’ll have to receive regular treatments to maintain your new, younger-looking skin.
Although individual results vary, Botox results typically last anywhere between three to six months.
