A photofacial relies on photorejuvenation, or IPL technology, to send gentle pulses of light into your skin. As this broad-spectrum light reaches the deeper skin layers, it’s absorbed by melanin, the pigment that gives both your skin and its flaws their color.
As with other advanced light-based skin treatments, photofacial IPL disrupts excess pigment, stimulates the growth of collagen, and tightens and refreshes underlying skin.
Because IPL technology is highly versatile, photofacials are an ideal treatment for correcting or improving a wide range of skin flaws. In addition to improving overall skin texture and tightening your pores, a photofacial can help diminish the appearance of the following common skin flaws:
IPL technology is safe and effective, making photofacial treatments a quick, noninvasive clinical skin treatment that yields long-lasting results. Although IPL can be used on any area of your body, it isn’t as effective on tanned or darker skin. Most patients achieve the results they’re looking for after multiple treatments.
During your photofacial, you wear protective eyewear to protect your retinas and corneas. The treatment itself may cause some mild discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to having a small rubber band snapped against your skin as the IPL device is passed over the treatment area. If you have a low tolerance for discomfort, Dr. Ryan can apply an anesthetic lotion prior to beginning.
Treatment time may be as short as 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Beautiful skin and a more youthful appearance can usually be achieved within two to four treatments. Because IPL has few potential side effects, you can resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment.
Following your photofacial treatment, you may notice that areas of unwanted pigmentation appear slightly darker. These darker areas fade in about a week or so, eventually becoming much lighter than they were prior to treatment.
You may also see mild blistering surrounding individual brown spots, which will gently flake off over the course of a few days.
Visible blood vessels diminish or clear within two weeks, while areas of diffuse flushing or redness gradually fade away, leaving clear, younger-looking skin.
